It was natural for the department to be concerned about the implications of the post graduate studies for the rehabilitation of senior cadres specializing in scientific fields and to contribute to teaching in the department and raises the level of interest of the researchers to qualify as specialists in the different areas, all that encouraged the starting of the post-graduate studies in the department. The interest that the university showed to facilitate the system of post-graduate studies and develop the specialized cadres had encouraged the quick start of the post-graduate program. The post-graduate studies program has started since 1978.

However, the section did not start until early 1980s when it was a section of the Department of History, especially after the availability of specialized professors assuming teaching of the post-graduate school and the supervision of the thesis, The study was launched in the field of Islamic Archaeology during the academic year 1982 - 1983 and continued sporadically until the present time, It is instructive to note that the department focuses on the award of a certificate of higher specialization (masters) rather than focus on the granting of a certificate of fine specialization (Ph.D.), although there is one Ph.D. awarded in the section so far. The department follows teaching regulations set by university and the study system of the faculty, which summarizes that the students must pass a series of subjects in the preparatory year which prepare him/her to establish a thesis that fulfills requirement of the post-graduate studies (preliminary year + six months to prepare a proposal of research + 24 months preparing the thesis ) this for the Masters program; for the Ph.D. program a proposal is submit and then the preparation of a thesis is discussed.

The development of post-graduate studies in the department can be traced through the three disciplines which the department focuses on to develop the students. These disciplines are:

Pre-history Archaeology

Classical Archaeology

Islamic Archaeology
