Awad Mustapha Sadwya, born at Susa in Cyrenaica, graduated with a thesis on archeology from Liverpool University in 1964, when he had already been for some years an assistant of R. G. Goodchild who was then Supervisor of Antiquities in Cyrenaica. Highly esteemed by all both in Libya and abroad for his solid scientific accomplishments and his up-rich character, he became first Supervisor of Antiquities in Cyrenaica and from 1970 on General Director. In this post he showed his competence and dedicated all his energy to the scientific organization and vitalization of the service. Committed to the improvement of the cultural preparation of his colleagues at all levels, he was a farsighted organizer, level headed and determined in every field in which the department worked, excavations, museums, restorations. I still remember his long, attentive and stimulating visits to the excavations at Leptis and Sabratha, and above all his constant work in defense of the antiquities, even in critical times for the life of his country, that country which hem like Aissa el-Aswed and Mohamed el-Mayar, had always served with devotion even unto the supreme sacrifice.
